Teach myself a skill Term 4, Week 6

Teach myself a skill

In the past four weeks, the Aroha team had to teach themselves a skill. My one to learn was to know all the numbers up to twenty in Afrikaans. I had had change the goal a couple of times to achieve it because I had to do other things which took up quite a lot of time.
My goal is: To learn how to say numbers up to 20 in Afrikaans (and some of the basic words and phrases). I think that I have done a good job on this because I spent a lot of time on it at school and at home.

My self reflection. Term 4, 2017

My self reflection. Term 4, 2017

This year, I had to write a self reflection on the way that I saw the year in my own words. Here is my reflection:

This year I learned how to multiply using algorithm, how to write an explanation and how to write an information report. The most challenging task that I had to do was to write and explanation piece but I wrote an information report instead. After my teacher, Mrs Price, told my group what we were doing wrong, I chose a different topic and completed the writing correctly. The most fun I had this year was when I went to South Clusters for high jump, long jump, and cricket ball throw, and got through to Western Bays. This year I got the jobs Techie in Term 1 and 2 and Peer Mediator in 3 and 4. Overall, I enjoyed the whole St Mary’s experience and I will never forget the wonderful people I met in those 6 years.

Art skills : Term 4 Week 2 Topic : Austin's Butterfly

Art skills Topic : Austin's Butterfly

This week another activity that we did for art was to watch this video called Austin's Butterfly. This video is about this boy who's picture of a butterfly changed a lot just by his peers giving him feedback (his picture are below).  Nobody touch his art besides himself which is pretty impressive. This video is about the values of great feedback and resilience. His art work show us the picture of a Eastern Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly that he was going to put on a card.

Art skills : Term 4 Week 2 Topic

Art skills  Topic : Drawing

This week the Aroha team has to focus on art. We had to draw one picture of one of these things : a Cute pig, a Cartoon Character or a Funny robot. I chose the Cute pig because I thought it might be a challenge i would like face. It turned out that was quite easy to draw. I leaned that many cute animals have a 0 on their tummy to make them look cute and that they have a really big head with small eyes. I have inserted the video for you so you can watch.

This is my drawing of a cute pig (I have changed a few things)!

My learning this term: Week 10, Term 3

 My learning this Term

This term I learnt how to write a good Speech, which I've written about before. There are 3 types of speeches: Information speeches, Persuasive speeches and humorous speeches. I choose to do a Persuasive speech because that is what I am strongest at. The hardest speech to write is a humorous speech and the easiest one to write is an information speech and that leaves persuasive speech in the middle. I didn't go in to the semis or the finals but I think I did great.

This week in our hubs we had to learn how to write a good descriptive piece. It went very well with my leaning goal which is ' To deliberately use written and visual language features when appropriate to enchane my writing e.g. similes, metaphors, personification, hyperbole and so on.

I also learned how to times fractions and decimals. Say, if I had to times 2/3 by 4/5, it  equals 8/20. To do it you would need to times the under-lined numbers together:
2/4 X 4/5 = 8/?   and
2/4 X 4/5 = ?/20
8/? + ?/20 =8/20
I haven't quite learn how to do the decimals yet but I will go onto my Math Hub and learn how to.

Art gallery and library visit

Art gallery and library visit

Last week, the Aroha team rode into town and went to the Art gallery and Library for a school trip. Aroha Rua went first, then my hub, Aroha Tahi went next. My group went to the library first. At the Library we read a book that would have something to do with the Art gallery visit and then we did some black-out poems. A black-out poem is when you take a page with lots of words and you chose some of them and black out the rest so the chosen words stand out. After that we were aloud to go around the Library and take books out if you brought your Library card. I didn't but we could come back after school to get them. After that we ate lunch and read more books.

When we had finished we crossed the road to the Art gallery and meet our teacher, Fiona. We went for a walk up the stairs where the first art expedition which was by Jae Kang and her art piece was called 'Waves of your breath' and it's touchable, unlike all of the other ones. Most people thought that it was made of pastel or water paint, but it was made of a special ink. We walked back down and talked about the art for a bit before we went to see the next expedition, by Bob Jahnke. His art is made out of fluorescent tubes, shapes and mirrors. The art work is called 'ATA'. The mirrors are use to to make the effect of it going on forever until our eyes can't see the end anymore.  We have a quick look before we sit down to talk about the shapes representing some thing. After that we looked around again before we start our artwork.

We receive a black piece of wood and are told to add some crosses, squares and triangles. to it with the help of coloured pencils. We look around the expedition for some inspiration and continue with our art. once we'd finished that we moved over to the art room to do the other art we can't do in there. We first write our name on the back and then put art aprons on so uniforms don't get messy. We add more colours to our art and gather around the teaching table for the next instructing. We add paint to the art by painting Maori words, such as 'Tahi', the word I used. Once we had finished that, we took our aprons off and said "Good bye" to Fiona and went to collect our bags and get ready for our trip back to school. I hope that I can come back and see the expedition before it goes.

Caritas Blogger: Term 3, Week 8

                                               Caritas

Caritas is an organization that raise money for the poor and needy and travel around the world to help. They traveled all over New Zealand, all the Pacific islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Africa, Thailand, India, Afghanistan, and many more places. They have 21 staff bases and teach the Gospel values. Here is a link to the Caritas web site  http://www.caritas.org.nz/who-we-are

Last term, the Aroha team did a challenge to help fundraiser for Caritas. We had to create an arcade with that had something to do with Caritas. My teams one was a tap challenge and having to walk to the estuary and collect water with a bucket. The bucket gets VERY heavy when it is full. Kids in Africa have to do that every day.

Caritas is an amazing charity that changes live every day. They are like 'The good Samaritan' parable, Luke 10:25-37. A summery of the story is that a man got robbed and many people that passed him didn't help except one man who was a different to him. He Bandaged him and took him on his donkey to the nearest Inn an took care of him for awhile an gave the Inn keeper some money to help. The people that walked past the injured man weren't very good neighbors but the man that did help was a very good neighbor. Caritas is a lot like the good neighbor and they are showing us what to be like.

My reading goal: Term 3, week 5

My reading goal: Term 3

In term 3 my reading goal I have to complete is:
I can identify and evaluate the way writers use language and ideas to suit their purpose. I feel good about the way I am working towards this because I can notice different language. A used to just read and read but now I pay more attention to the different types of languages.
Here is an example:
I see the tree growing as the sun swims beneath the waves. It grows as fast as a bike at top speed. It's a plane shooting into the sky. It stops suddenly. The tree shakes the world below with a 'rumble.'...
Here are the keys:       - metaphor      - simile      - onomatopoeia      different sentences
     - personification

All of the keys above are what and many more are what I have to spot and evaluate on from reading. I also have to put those features in my writing.

Speech reflection

Speech reflection

In the past few weeks, the Senior and Middle school and had to write a speech and present it to the teachers and if they're lucky, get chosen to take part in the finals. If they win that they go onto the next composition and if they win that they go onto the next one and so on. My speech is on the environment and it is called Is our world Sustainable? I mentioned trees being cut down, oil flowing into the sea, rubbish over flowing land fills and how we can do more to help and make our world better. Here is a photo of my cue cards.

My cue cards, 1 - 7 in order.

Week 8 writing reflection

Week 8 writing reflection

This week for our writing, Aroha Tahi had to retell the last supper. I feel good about the way I used speech marks and how I followed all the rules of writing with them. One thing I will remember for the future is to put lower case letters after I put speech marks. I used to put capital letters straight after the talking marks but now I use lower case. In the writing I learned that the Garden of Gethsemane is also known as the Mount of Olives, as I didn't know that fact before.

Faith of the Centurion

Faith of the Centurion

'This week for R.E. and writing, my hub had to do a retell on the scripture, 'The faith of the Centurion'. I feel good about the way I revised and edited my writing to make it even better than before. The faith of the centurion is about a leader Capernaum ask a great favour from Jesus, to heal is much loved servant. Since he had such great faith, his servant got cured very quickly.

Here is the video of 'The Faith of the Centurion'.

My previous writing goal

My previous writing goal.

My previous writing goal was, 'to proofread my writing to make corrections in spelling, punctuation and grammar.' I feel good about achieving this goal and now I remember to do it often. Most of the time I make my writing way better than before. One thing I will remember for the future is to ask my buddy to reread my writing because I sometimes forget to edit. I used to just finish and do somthing else, but now I reread again and again. Here is some proof that I have completed my goal successfully.

Look at my editing!
Sorry it can't be read. Lines - editing.

Week 5: Reflection

Week 5 Reflection

This week I chose the writing goal, 'I can identify and evaluate the way writers’ use language and ideas to suit their purpose'. The people that will help me with this goal are my teachers, Mrs Akkerman, Mrs Robbie, Mrs Price and my parents. Some equipment that will help are some planing sheets and the literacy hub that was given to my writing group. I hope I can achieve this goal as well as this one, 'To proofread my writing to make corrections in spelling , puncuation and grammer'. That was my last writing goal.

Reflection on writing. Week 4

My narritive writing

I feel good about my writing because my literacy group had to do a narrative before the end of Thursday as a challenge and I . One thing that I will remember for the future is to set the sence as I didn't do that in my writing until I was reminded by Mrs Akkerman. I used to not edit and revise but now I go over my writing again and again to see if there are any mistakes or better words I can put in.
Here are a few of my sentenses I used for my writing

I had never seen rain like this before. It almost seems, green? = The hook
At least the scores are even now. 1 to Jax, 1 to me. = Another hook
My room, the only place I really feel welcome. = The beginning sentence to chapter 1

Term 2: Writing

Writing

This week as a challenge from Mrs Price my literacy group had to do a report on anything we wanted in a week! My report was on water, and how it is a precious resource. Did you know that 97% of the worlds water is salty, and 2% of the 3% left is frozen or under ground and that leaves only 1% for all land animals. Heres a photo of my work.

I'm happy with my report for it has many diagrams and big fact filled paragraphs that fills up 2 whole pages!

Writing learning

Writing learning

This week I have focused on turning normal sentences into complex sentences. These make great hooks for the beginning paragraph and give lots of info. Here is a few examples. Instead of, he slept well, you could put in a simile like, he slept like a rock. Also, instead of, she couldn't see anything, you could put in a short sentences like, nothing in sight. That is what I've learned today and I hope you've learned something too.

My learning goals 2017

My learning goals 2017

These goals you see down here are my learning goals for 2017 from my learning journal.

Reading goal:

To evaluate and intergrate ideas and infomation across a few texts. To enunciate my words clearly, and slow down when I am reading to an audiance.
I think that I am doing ok with my reading goal for I sometimes remember but I think that I am geting better at my goal because I am doing a lot of reading with my teachers, Mrs Akkerman and Mrs Price

Writing goal:

To proofread my writing to make corrections in spelling, puntuation and gramma.
Right now I think that I am doing fine with my writing goal because I sometimes remember to proofread but sometimes I don't so I am glad that my Reading and writing groups are the same.

Maths goal:

To compare fraction sizes with whole numbers, e.g. 8 pies shared amongst 3 people = 8/3 = 2 and 2/3.
I am pretty confidente with my maths and think that this is a good goal to work toward because I need to work on my fractions

Those are my learning goals and reflections for 2017.
